COL. SPRINGS / EL PASO COUNTY: Safer At Home Update

Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers

Tuesday, Colorado Springs Mayor and officials from El Paso County provided an update on the city and county's transition to Safer At Home guidelines.

"Colorado Springs and El Paso County have encouraging numbers," the mayor said. "We're 12-and-a-half percent of Colorado's population but as of yesterday [Monday, April 27] we had six-point-three percent of positive COVID tests and nine-point-six percent of deaths statewide. Our number of hospitalizations is far, far less than our proportion of the state."

Mayor Suthers said he has no plans to rush the reopening process.

"I actually feel quite comfortable with the pace that we're on. If our numbers continue to improve, state numbers go in a different direction and we think it's incumbent to ask for relief ad open restaurants earlier or something like that, we'll sit down and talk about it."

The full update is below. Along with Mayor Suthers, speakers include:

--Dr. Robin Johnson - Medical Director, El Paso County Public Health

--Dr. David Steinburnner - UCHealth

--Dr. Brian Erling - Centura Penrose-St. Francis Health Systems

--Dirk Draper - Colorado Springs Chamber and EDC

--Mark Waller - El Paso County Commissioner

--Susan Wheelan, Director, El Paso County Health
