04/14/23 Blog: Kelly Brough Wants to Be Mayor

WE HAVE SOME BIG SHOW NEWS TODAY and on the one hand, I'm extremely sad for myself and for you listeners, but as Susan is one of my dearest friends I'm thrilled for her and her next adventure! If you want to quickly drop Susan an email her email address is susanwitkin@iheartmedia.com but she won't have access after today at 3!

KELLY BROUGH JOINS US TO CHAT ABOUT THE MAYOR'S RACE She is one of the two runoff candidates and she's on today to do a deeper dive into her vision for Denver. Find her website and donate here.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT MIGHTY MILLIONS SHOW HOME FOR A MINUTE The Children's Hospital Colorado Mighty Millions Raffle WILL give away a new home to someone (unlike another home raffle) and it has been designed to perfection by a wonderful woman named Joanne Brutsch from Casey and Company. I LOVE this house so indulge me for a minute. She's on at 1:35 and you can see the home or buy your tickets (before the Early Bird deadline tonight and maybe win a new BMW or trip to Bora Bora or $85,000 in cash by clicking here.

BEN MURREY FROM INDEPENDENCE IS TALKING PROPERTY TAXES! Ben has done several excellent videos on property taxes over the last two weeks. He joins me at 2p to discuss it, but you MUST at least watch these videos. Start with this primer on property taxes:

Then he did this one on what is causing our property taxes to spike this year.

This one is about how Colorado Legislators conspired to make this happen by lying to residents to get more of our money.

This is where we sit right now.

THE CASTILLOS ARE FIGHTING FOR PARENTS RIGHT NOW Even though they lost their only son in the STEM shooting. They are trying to force Douglas County schools and STEM High School to release what they say is critical and shocking information about failures in school safety. The plead their case before a judge again yesterday and we'll see how he rules. They gained the information through depositions in their suit against the District and now they want the world to know the "shocking" information they discovered in the hopes it will change the culture around school safety so no other parents have to suffer through what they've been through.

WHY THE SUPER EXTRA ABORTION BILLS IN BEING PASSED IN COLORADO ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL In their zeal to make sure as many babies as possible are killed before birth, Democrats are trying to make our extreme abortion laws (elective abortion up the moment of birth is a-okay here) even worse. They want to ban pregnancy centers whose only crime is trying to convince women NOT to kill their babies while offering support for new moms in the form of diapers, formula and other means. They want to make abortion a no co-pay event covered by insurance, which isn't even true for cancer treatments. Krista Kafer writes about how these rules would work here.

MY FRIEND KELLY MAHER IS ON WITH JON CALDARA And this is a great one.

WE'VE LOST OUR SPOT AS THE #1 POT TOWN And Portland can have it. Here is a pretty comprehensive explainer of who sells more weed and how much it costs. The way Amendment 64 was rolled out has shown other cities what to do and what NOT to do if you ask me.

FENTANYL USERS, THERE IS SOME BAD STUFF GOING AROUND The Boulder PD is issuing what should be called a "Don't Take the Brown Acid" moment as they warn fentanyl users that there is a batch of fentanyl that has led to five overdose calls in 36 hours. Read more here.

DENVER'S SANCTUARY CITY STATUS ISN'T SO SANCTUARY-LIKE As they have announced that they will no longer shelter illegal immigrants who have NOT had contact with U.S. Department of Homeland Security officers. Why? Because they are heartless bastards who talk the talk but refuse to walk the walk when it comes to actually BEING a sanctuary city? Nah, it's because the federal government isn't sending them money anymore to house them. So compassion has limits and they are when the city actually has to spend its OWN money to help them.

ANHEUSER-BUSCH IS SCRAMBLING TO RECOVER FROM THE DYLAN MULVANEY INCIDENT And I have to say this seems very cowardly on their part. The company is saying that the decision to partner with Mulvaney was made by a "low level marketing staffer" but I do not believe that. If that were the case, why haven't we heard that the VP, who we've all seen call the brand "fratty" and "out of touch" has been fired?

PARLER IS DEAD And I'm not sure if I even bothered to set up a Parler account in a fit of pique during the height of shadowbanning of conservatives but now I won't be able to reach my full potential on the social media platform because they announced today or yesterday that they are dead. GUN VIOLENCE IS AN URBAN PROBLEM And not even in all urban areas. Gun researchers John Lott has dug into the numbers and he's found that our "gun violence epidemic" is largely fueled by Democrat run cities. Guess where gun crime is the lowest? Outside cities, where residents have the most guns. From the report (it's linked in this story):

In 2020, 52% of counties (with 10% of the population) had no murders. 68% of counties have no more than one murder, and about 18% of the population. These counties account for only 2.6% of all murders in the country. The worst 1% of counties (the worst 31 counties) have 21% of the population and 42% of the murders. The worst 2% of counties (62 counties) contain 31% of the population and 56% of the murders. The worst 5% of counties contain 47% of the population and account for 73% of murders. But even within those counties, the murders are very heavily concentrated in small areas. This concentration of murders is the highest in over a decade. Between 2010 and 2014, the percentage of murders in the worst 5% of the counties fell from 71% to 69%. But between 2014 and 2020, they had consistently climbed back by four percentage points, so murders were even more concentrated than in 2010. The one percent of worst counties drove that increase. The share of murders in these worst counties rose over this period, but there was no change in these counties’ populations.

Remember this when someone tells you that gun violence is out of control. It is, but mostly in Democrat cities that embrace gun control.

AI CREATED THE NEXT JAMES BOND And he sure is handsome, although obviously he's not real so we're still waiting to find out who the next Bond will be. Check him out here.

IT'S TIME TO SPEND A MINUTE STARING AT A SUNSET We truly have the MOST spectacular sunsets in the world I think. This article gives you plenty of reasons to stop and stare and it's about good health.

MIT SCIENTISTS MAY HAVE FOUND A WAY TO REVERSE ALZHEIMER'S And though this is only in mice, it's promising because it's a completely unique way of treating the disease and not just another thing about amyloid plaque. It uses a peptide, which is a chain of amino acids, that are overactive in people with Alzheimer's and has shown great promise so far. Scientists are hopeful about this one, but human trials are probably a good bit away.

THE PRIMARY BREADWINNER HOUSEHOLD IS DYING As more and more couples have dual income homes, the version where one partner makes all the money is going away. Unsurprisingly, even as women are making more money, they are still bearing the load of the housework and childcare activities. Men are catching up, but still seem to have more time for leisure activities daily. Read more here, though it is paywalled, sorry.

RACE BASED ADMISSIONS POLICIES DON'T HELP MINORITY STUDENTS And the research is pretty clear. Students who are given a racial preference entry into an elite school where they are behind their peers in academic foundations are more likely to move away from challenging STEM fields and less likely to pass the Bar exam on the first try. This Op-ed explains how race based admissions merely give the appearance of equity.
