9/18/23 Blog: Our First DPS Board Candidate

KWAME SPEARMAN IS ON TODAY TO TALK ABOUT DENVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS As he is running for the At-Large seat being vacated by Tay Tay Anderson. The former of CEO and a former candidate for Denver Mayor, Kwame is an interesting guy. He's is to the left of me and most of you, but he's a pragmatic guy who wants to solve problems. He says he wants to take the politics and grandstanding out of DPS. Find his website here and he's on at 1.

ROB NATELSON TALKS ABOUT UNIVERSITY CENSORSHIP The notion of true academic freedom should be at the root of every university but today I've got Rob Natelson, the now retired professor, on to discuss the lie of academic freedom. He sent me an email that I turned into this column here that you should read that talks about how difficult it is to get permission to veer from accepted dogma on anything.

NOW WE'RE TRYING TO KILL MANUFACTURING IN COLORADO This story is disheartening but unsurprising. In the zeal to become the Governor most known for destroying business in his state, Polis has now set his sites on making manufacturing impossible in our state. New green house gas regulations will make it very expensive to manufacture here, and this could have a serious impact for us on things like gas, which is only JUST at four bucks because we have refineries in our state. He really wants us to be like California, where gas prices are hovering over five bucks right now. I'd love the chance to ask the Governor this: what if he's wrong? What if we can't do anything about the climate and greenhouse gases are just a naturally occurring part of the cycle? More importantLy, what if these manufacturers just pick up and move across the border to Wyoming? But we all know I don't get to ask the Governor questions.

FORT COLLINS RECOGNIZES THEY MADE HOUSING MORE EXPENSIVE How? They passed an ordinance to prevent large groups of people from living together in one home. The "You + Two" ordinance has helped create the huge housing shortage in Fort Collins now. Instead of just dropping the prohibition and letting the market sort it out, they are trying to figure out how to make housing even more expensive with zoning plans or just upping the limit by one more person. How about just saying no more than two people per bedroom in a home? If you really want to do something about housing this is a great way to kick the door down.

DENVER HAS ALMOST THE HIGHEST INFLATION IN THE COUNTRY Thank Goodness Democrats ran on saving us money, amiright? Denver now has the second highest inflation in the country. Prices are up 14% in the last two years. Read it here.

DOCTORS CAN'T TELL COVID FROM ALLERGIES NOW I can't make this stuff up. NBC News reported on the fact that doctors are having a hard time distinguishing covid from the common cold or even allergies now. But please continue to live in terror.

WHEN THE OPPRESSED BECOMES THE OPPRESSOR Ibram X Kendi's How to be an Anti Racist is in itself incredibly racist but in the aftermath of the George Floyd riots everyone threw this race hustler a ton of money and Boston University even started the Anti Racist Research Center and gave Kendi full control. Control he abused according to some at the center, which has just laid off 20 people and is being rebranded in a "fellowship" model. From the Boston Globe:

Current and former employees in the center who spoke with the Globe were critical of Kendi’s management and questioned how a department that has received millions of dollars in donations and grants since its launch could now be in a position where it is cutting staff.
...
“There are a number of ways it got to this point, it started very early on when the university decided to create a center that rested in the hands of one human being, an individual given millions of dollars and so much authority,” Piston said in an interview.
Saida Grundy, a BU associate professor of sociology and African American & Black Diaspora Studies, was named assistant director of narrative for the center in November 2020, but said she left less than a year later. She said the center lacked structure and she was forced to work hours beyond what was reasonable for the pay she received.
“It became very clear after I started that this was exploitative and other faculty experienced the same and worse,” she said.

Mr. Kendi has not commented on the exploitation he hoisted on his staff.

FIVE PEOPLE SHOT NEAR COORS FIELD THIS WEEKEND But I'm sure it's fine. They probably just need tiny homes. Read it here.

TRUMP DOUBLED DOWN ON MEET THE PRESS And I actually admire him for going on Meet the Press in the first place but I don't know if he did himself any favors. From criticizing the heartbeat bills that ban abortion after a fetal heartbeat to hedging on the trans question with Megyn Kelly, he is going to turn off some in his base. Watch the Meet the Press bit here.

WHEN IMPROVEMENT AREN'T IMPROVEMENTS The city of Denver made the choice to "improve" the area around Cheesman Park by adding bike lanes, ostensibly to make riding a bike safer and more convenient. Neighbors now say it's made things worse and there have been more accidents, one with an injury and they want a reconsideration.

LAUREN BOEBERT APOLOGIZES Boebert had a really bad week that will not away any time soon. I saw a meme this past weekend that suggested we call anyone who disrupts a theater production should be called a Boebert from now on. She finally apologized after the video of her very embarrassing behavior was release in full. Read it here.

THE RUSSELL BRAND STORY IS GROSS And one I think has probably been a common one throughout the years. Russell Brand was an admitted horndog for a long, long time. He has copped to having what he called a "sex addiction" when he was at the height of his fame. He's since calmed down and has been married for years with no signs of ongoing bad behavior, BUT and this is a BIG BUT, he treated women horribly in the past. Using them like Kleenex and throwing them away when he was done, and now his chickens seem to have come to roost in the form of multiple women who say he sexually assaulted them over the years. This sounds believable, but I'm tired of jumping to conclusions and am willing to let this all play out. One thing I truly don't like here is the anonymous nature of the accusations. That just isn't fair in any setting. His management team didn't think so, they dumped him.

YES, TEXT MESSAGES ABOUT GOVERNMENT BUSINESS ARE RECORDS And 9News is working to uncover what was said by two city workers on the day of the massive hail storm that hit Red Rocks on June 21st of this year. They are now suing to get them.

MDMA THERAPY COULD COME TO COLORADO AS EARLY AS 2024 A Colorado law was passed last year that anticipates the removal of MDMA from the Schedule 1 of narcotics, which would make it available as a therapeutic drug. Read it here.

JANN WENNER THINKS BLACK AND FEMALE ARTISTS AREN'T SMART That is truly the only way to take his comments in this New York Times article on his new book The Masters. Here is the bit that got him removed from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Board, a museum he helped create by the way:

All right, thank you. It’s not that they’re not creative geniuses. It’s not that they’re inarticulate, although, go have a deep conversation with Grace Slick or Janis Joplin. Please, be my guest. You know, Joni was not a philosopher of rock ’n’ roll. She didn’t, in my mind, meet that test. Not by her work, not by other interviews she did. The people I interviewed were the kind of philosophers of rock.
Of Black artists — you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as “masters,” the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn’t articulate at that level.

The founder of Rolling Stone is officially cancelled now I'm guessing.

DOES ANYONE BELIEVE MARK MILLEY? I hate to say it but when military leadership says "we believe with a high degree of certainty" I almost always think they are lying. I watched this story yesterday and was full of questions once it was over. This felt like blatant propaganda to me. We're supposed to believe that the Chinese just forgot to turn on the spy stuff?
