2/23/24 Blog: The Mayor On Today's Itty Bitty Show

MAYOR MIKE JOHNSTON RIGHT OUT OF THE CHUTE TODAY He joins us at the beginning of the show so we have time before we get kicked off for Spring Training baseball at 1. We're talking immigrants spending in Denver.

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION: I LIKE BEYONCE'S COUNTRY SONG And I'm not a fan of her music generally, though I still love Destiny's Child a whole bunch. I am genuinely confused by the music video. It's like she's just mailing it in and mocking the fact she made a country song but didn't want to do anything to support it. Watch it here, but trust me, if you watch the first 20 seconds you've seen the entire thing.

I GOT A FRUSTRATING TEXT THIS MORNING I found out yesterday that I wouldn't be able to interview Nikki Haley today because she has back to back events in South Carolina planned. I found this out after I posted on Twitter that I wanted questions for her, and that spawned a text exchange this morning with a friend from Kentucky. In it, he sent a text that said, "Sucks Nikki Haley interview was pushed- 3 Dems in my house would vote for her if she is the candidate". He has a wife and two daughters so I am pretty sure he meant them. This was very frustrating because we actually have a candidate that could unite people across the aisles instead of continue the division we have now. But it's a pipe dream, really.

TULSI GABBARD IS RUNNING FOR VP Speaking of uniting people, it sure would be interesting if Trump picked a former Democrat as VP, and Tulsi Gabbard appears to be working hard to make that happen. She gave a blistering speech at CPAC where she called out the Democrats and the Biden administration for using the Department of Justice to attack political opponents. She is obviously trying to up her chances and her profile with Republicans and Trump.

A GREAT STORY ABOUT A GREAT DELI If you haven't been to the Bagel Deli you are missing out on the best Jewish deli in Denver. There, I said it. Sure there are others that are good (Zaidy's I'm looking at you) but Bagel Deli to me is the very best and comparable to Jewish delis I've visited in NYC and other bigger cities. This is a great article from the Gazette about the family owned business you should read and then go get a bagel and some chopped chicken liver.

THE BOULDER FILM FESTIVAL IS READY TO GO And they have some really interesting films for you to check out. Read them here.

CAN WE TALK ABOUT LAYOFFS FOR A MINUTE? I've not really talked too much about tech layoffs but they have been significant, and now DISH network is laying off more employees here in Centennial. Is this just AI making people more efficient of signs of a weakening economy? This article says no on the AI part, but wouldn't it be interesting if the sector that created AI is the hardest hit first? This article says return to the office policies are designed to get people to quit, which may have merit. This is definitely a thing to watch, though I don't know what it means overall.

EXPECT AC UNIT THEFT NEXT The other day the story about the bronze plaque being stolen off the Martin Luther King, Jr. statue got me thinking about 2008 when the economy crapped out in Florida. Thieves began targeting anything metal to sell as scrap, including entire ac units on houses that were under construction. A booming market developed for AC cages that locked up the unit. Now we need to be on the lookout for sprinkler blowout thieves because that's happening in Littleton. If you're an enterprising metal worker, you should get cracking on cages for that too.

ANOTHER OZEMPIC SIDE EFFECT: SAGGING SKIN This used to happen mostly with bariatric patients who lost a lot of weight quickly but now Ozempic patients are showing up asking about skin removal after rapid weight loss with the drug. Just so you know, skin removal is EXPENSIVE and very invasive. Just letting you know.

WHY THE RIGHT CAN'T DO SARCASM OR PARODY As a means of changing people's minds. Case in point, today's Drudge Headline:

The headline links to this story from Mediaite about Trump supporter Jack Posobiec's speech at CPAC. They even include this snippet in the story:

But what did he mean? You have to go to Posobiec's Twitter page for the highlights if you don't want to watch the whole speech. This is his "plan".

But the media is only reporting the first part, not the part where he outline ending democracy by doing what Democrats have been doing for YEARS now. We don't get to do sarcasm, because the left media portrays it as gospel truth.

SCIENTISTS GROW TESTICLES AND THE INTERNET REACTS And The Not The Bee site grabbed the best responses from X here.

BIDEN IS USING NOTECARDS AT PRIVATE FUNDRAISERS I've told you guys for year that you should go to private event if you have a chance to really see what politicians are REALLY like. They tend to be looser and more off the cuff, especially at fundraisers. Not so much Joe Biden, although I stand by what I say that you can see what someone is REALLY like. Our President has to use note cards for pre approved questions from donors at private fundraisers. This is incredibly alarming and shows that his mental condition is truly worrisome.

THE EV INDUSTRY IS OUT OF RICH BUYERS We've been trying to tell them this for some time now, but it's nice to have my warnings confirmed by this comment in a story about the troubles facing Rivian, the electric truck maker:

"We’ve been living in this wave of 'Oh, EVs are great, they're going to continue the accelerated growth and only going to get better,' and now it seems like they're hitting this reality point," said Jessica Caldwell, head of insights at Edmunds. "Mass-market buyers have less income and a lot more questions."

Virtue signaling is expensive and real life buyers want to make sure they can get where they need to go in a timely fashion so yes, this is an issue. Not just for Rivian though, for every car maker that is all in on EVs.

WHITE PEOPLE ARE BETTER AT DRUNK PEOPLE ACTIVITIES This made me laugh.

HOW THEY INVENTED WOMEN'S POCKETS I feel seen.

THIRTEEN MINUTES TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE With Jordan Peterson.

I think this will do for a short show.
