What's with the opposition to drilling in ANWR?

A critical look at one of the largest oil reserves in the US, hijacked from an e-mail forward.

What is ANWR? The Arctic National Wildlife Reserve.

A comparison:

Some perspective:

Note where the proposed drilling area is (the ANWR coastal plain):

This is what the Democrats, liberals and greens show you when they talk about ANWR (and these are, in fact, photos of ANWR):

Isn't it beautiful? Why would we want to drill in such a pristine, beautiful environment? Well, it's not exactly the truth. Remember the maps above? They propose drilling on a coastal plain. Do these rivers and valleys and mountains look like a coastal plain to you?

Well, this is what the coastal plain area looks like in the winter:

And in the summer:

And here are a couple Google Maps images of the area:

As you can see, the proposed drilling area is a barren wasteland.

Greens say that they are concerned about the effects of drilling on local wildlife. Below is a photo of the "depleted wildlife" situation created by drilling around Prudhoe Bay (which accounts for 17% of domestic US oil production) -- the caribou obviously can't stand it.

Summer:

But the scene is a bit different in the winter:

This bear seems particularly troubled by the pipeline as well:

Now why are the Democrats lying about ANWR?

Well, remember when Al Gore said that the government should work toward artificially raising gas prices to $5 a gallon? Well, they are close to realizing their goal.
