Colorado part of $45 million settlement with Skechers

Skechers claims about "Shape Up" shoes went too far, consumers may now make claims to recover some of their money.
Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Skechers said its "Shape Up" shoes could help you get in shape without seeting foot in a gym. The company also claimed they promoted weight loss, toned muscles, improved posture and reduced stress on knees and ankles.

Colorado joined 45 other states in filing suit against Skechers for deceptive trade practices.  The states said Skechers didn't have evidence to back up some of its claims.

Skechers is paying $45 million to settle with the states.  Five million dollars will be divided by the states to fund future consumer protection actions. $40 million is being placed in a consumer redress fund managed by the Federal Trade Commission.

If you feel you were a victim, you can file a claim at www.ftc.gov/skechers or you call call 866-325-4186.

The average payout is expected to be $20 for every pair of shoes purchased.

The Hewlett Fire burning 20 miles northwest of Fort Collins has grown to 982 acres and remains just 5 % contained. Fire investigators say the fire was human caused but have yet to provide details on exactly how it started.

More than 200 firefighters are working the fire which is burning in rugged terrain in Poudre Canyon. They will be asssited by a Type 1 and a Type 3 helicopter and a heavy air tanker.

The big concern Wednesday is wind.  Winds on Wednesday afternoon could gust up to 50 mph.

Last night one firefighter suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released.

The fire is burning about a quarter of a mile away from dozens of homes located on Highway 14 between mile markers 110 and 115. Residents have been told to pack and be ready to leave if an evacuation order is issued.

Colo. wildfire believed to be human-caused

Firefighters say a wildfire burning on an estimated 640 acres in northern Colorado is 5 percent contained.
Monday, May 14, 2012

Fire officials said Tuesday that the blaze northwest of Fort Collins has grown as temperatures rise and the humidity drops, but it is growing in a direction away from homes.  Fire spokeswoman Reghan Cloudman says calls were made to 160 phone numbers telling residents to prepare to leave, just in case.  Cloudman says the fire is within a quarter mile of some homes.  Two trails in the area are closed.  850KOA's Vicky Evans shot these aerial photos of the fire:

The fire is believed to have been human-caused, but investigators haven't determined if it was intentional.  In western Colorado, firefighters expected to have a 170-acre fire between Delta and Whitewater fully contained sometime Friday.  It was 80 percent contained Tuesday. That fire was started by lightning. No structures are threatened.

GOP kills civil unions in Colorado special session

A last-ditch effort by Colorado's governor to give gay couples rights similar to married couples in the state has failed.
Monday, May 14, 2012

Republicans on Monday rejected civil unions legislation during a special session that Gov. John Hickenlooper called to tackle the issue and others killed last week by a GOP filibuster.  Civil unions would let partners make medical decisions for each other and enhance their parental and inheritance rights.  The bill had enough support to clear the House during the regular session and get to the Democratic governor's desk. But Republicans refused to bring it up for a vote before a key deadline.  Hickenlooper then brought lawmakers into a special session to reconsider what he called a ``fundamental question of fairness and civil rights.''  A Republican-controlled House committee voted down the bill Monday along party lines.

Denver council votes to make urban camping illegal

The Denver City Council has approved an ordinance that bans camping on public or private property without permission.
Monday, May 14, 2012

The City Council approved the proposal in a 9-4 vote Monday. It comes seven years after the city embraced an ambitious plan to provide housing and job training for Denver's homeless.  Backers say it's intended to eliminate a hazard to the health and safety of homeless people as well as to the rest of the population. They say it will be accompanied by a push to provide more shelters.  Opponents say the ban ignores the fact that the city doesn't have enough shelter space. They say it could drive the homeless to other cities or into hiding, making it harder to find them and get them back on their feet.

Nuggets Birdman may be extortion victim

A statement from Chris Anderson's lawyer says a woman from California lied about her age after sending scantily clad photos.
Thursday, May 10, 2012

A lawyer for Nuggets center Chris "Birdman" Anderson says his client may be an extortion victim rather than the suspect in a crimes against children case.

According to a statemnent released by Coline Bresee, a woman from California  mailed letters to Anderson in 2010 along with scantily clad photos of herself. The two communicated during 2011 and the woman came to Colorado and had indentification showing she was 21.

The statement says, "After leaving Colorado, she became upset at his lack of interest. In 2012, she threatened to retaliate if he did not provide financial renumeration."

The statement also contends the woman's mother wrote an email saying, "I want him to pay for everything on her Amazon wish list, 5K for her bedding stuff and her victoria secret wish list."

Bresee says Anderson has been cooperating with investigators and says "We're confident it will show Chris did not engage in any criminal conduct."

On Thursday, the Douglas County Crimes Against Children unit obtained a search warrant for Anderson's home. They reportedly removed a computer from his residence.

Anderson has not been arrested. Douglas County says Anderson had been under investigation since February following a tip from a California law enforcement agency.

Details are sketchy but the Douglas County Sheriff says the home of Chris "Birdman" Anderson has been searched today.

The Internet Crimes Agaainst Children Unit obtianed a search warrant. They have been investigating Anderson since February acting on information from a law enforcement agency in California.

The Sheriff's Office says it recovered property from Anderson's home that it believes is connected to the case.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is on-going.

Humane Society claims evidence of pig abuse on Wyoming farm

The Humane Society of the United States says it has pictures and video showing cruel treament of pigs at a farm that supplies pork to Tyson foods.
Tuesday, May 8, 2012

The Humane Society of the United States has revealed undercover pictures and video shot at Wyoming Premium Farms last month.

The Society says the video shows workers kicking piglets like soccer balls, swinging sick piglets by their hind legs and striking mother pigs with their fists.  A heavy worker sits on top of a sow  with a broken leg, bouncing on her hindquarters. The Society also found use of cramped, gestation breeding crates where sows are kept for months at a time without any room to move.

The Wheatland, Wyoming farm supplies Tyson Foods and is owned by Denver-based Itoham America, Inc.

The Society says the use of breeding crates is being abandoned by farms all over the world and companies such as McDonald's and Burger King are refusing to buy meat from companies that use them.

The Humane Society wants Tyson Foods to adopt a similar crate-free policy.
