Gold leaf arrives for Capitol dome project

A Brinks car delivered the 65 ounces and 10 ounces of reserve gold.  The reserve gold will be held for repairs on the gold leaf that will cover the capitol dome beginning this summer.  Governor John Hickenlooper accepted the donation from the AngloGold/Cripple Creek Victor mining company in Colorado.  The value of the donation of gold, refining and shipping is valued at $125,000.  The gold was mined in Teller County.  It took some 75 monstor truckloads...at 300 tons per load to mine the 75 ounces gold.  It was then sent to an Italian company in Florence that specializes in gold leaf.  Guards monitored the delivery and the gold leaf will be stored in a secure location,  until it is ready to be used by craftsman who will begin gilding the dome this summer.  The gold leaf is pictured above.  Governor Hickenlooper is holding the 10 ounce ingot of gold that will be used for repairs on the gold leaf when it is applied to the capitol dome.

 

 

 

Tornado at DIA

DIA evacuated travelers and workers into tornado shelters during the Tuesday afternoon weather event.

DIA used it's evacuation plan to move travelers and workers into tornado shelters as a small tornado touched down Tuesday at about 4:30pm.  No injuries or damage was reported.  Frontier Airlines also evacuated its DIA call center, as a precaution.    The system of storms prompted tornado warnings on Tuesday afternoon in parts of Adams, Elbert, Weld and Morgan counties.

Black Forest Fire at 85-percent containment

502 homes have been destroyed, but fire has not grown.

Crews are continuing to see progress in the fight against the Black Forest Fire in Colorado. Containment is now at 85 percent. The cost of the fire has grown to more than 7 million dollars.  El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa residents of the Cathedral Pines area are being allowed home this afternoon and more residents will be allowed in for 3-hour survey tours.  The names of those killed have not yet been released.  Sheriff Miketa also said they are narrowing in on the area where the fire started.

Evergreen Man missing

Jeffco authorities look for 57 year old Ron Kuetemeier.

Ronald Kuetemeier, 57, was last seen at his home in Evergreen on Friday June 14, 2013.  His wife contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report him as a missing person the following day.  Kuetemeier works in the IT field and is currently unemployed. He is believed to be on foot, as all of the families vehicles are accounted for, and he often runs the trails in Elk Meadow Park. Foul play is not suspected in his disappearance.

Kuetemeier is a white male, 5’10”, 160 lbs, grey hair and green eyes. Anyone who may have information as to the whereabouts of Ronald Kuetemeier is asked to call the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office tip line at 303-271-5612.

Containment grows Big Meadows fire in Rocky Mountain National Park

Big Meadows fire now at 95 percent containment.

The Big Meadows fires in Rocky Mountain National Park has burned 604 acres, but the fire is considered to be 95% contained.   Two Type-1 Hot Shot Crews are being released today from the firelines.  All major roads and facilities in the park are open.

TV show to be filmed in Colorado

The Hallmark Channel will begin filming a series this summer called, "When Calls the Heart."  It will be shot near Telluride.  Its' the first time a TV series has been shot in Colorado since 1991 when Father Dowling Mysteries was filmed here.   "We are delighted with Hallmark Channel's choice of Colorado for its latest series," said Govenor Hickenlooper.  Production begins on July 22nd.  Emmy winner Jean Smart is among the stars of the new series.

        ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Thursday released running back Willis McGahee, it was announced.

        “It’s never easy to part ways with a veteran player who made so many positive contributions to our team and community,” Broncos Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said. “I appreciate all of the competitiveness, toughness and leadership Willis brought to the Broncos. He was an integral part of our team’s turnaround during the past two seasons, and I wish him the best as he continues his NFL career.”

        McGahee (6-0, 235 pounds) is an 11th-year veteran who spent the last two seasons with Denver, totaling 1,930 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 416 carries (4.6 avg.) in 25 regular-season games played (23 starts). A two-time Pro Bowl selection, McGahee spent his first eight NFL seasons with Buffalo (2003-06) and Baltimore (2007-10).

        In 130 career regular-season games (89 starts), he owns 8,097 rushing yards and 63 touchdowns on 1,957 carries (4.1 avg.) in addition to 202 receptions for 1,319 yards (6.5 avg.) with five scores. In nine career postseason games played (3 starts), he has amassed 111 attempts for 408 yards (3.7 avg.) with five touchdowns along with 10 catches for 70 yards (7.0 avg.).

        Drafted by the Bills in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft from the University of Miami, McGahee capped his collegiate career by breaking the Hurricanes’ single-season records with 1,753 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2002 to earn consensus first-team All-America honors in addition to being named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

        A graduate of Central High School in Miami, McGahee was born on Oct. 21, 1981.

Criminal mischief in Highlands Ranch

Douglas County deputies say that a couple males broke over 20 car and home windows spanning a 20-block area overnight.

A surveillance camera caught the suspects in their Dodge Durango driving up to one house and shows them throwing a rock at the window.

Inaugural 787 United flight to depart Denver to Tokyo

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock joined business leaders and a host of dignitaries including Governor John Hickenlooper in a ceremony before the inaugural non-stop flight from Denver to Tokyo on a United 787 plane.  The idea is to increase busines between Colorado and Japan.  850KOA's Steffan Tubbs is also joining the maiden voyage.  The eleven hour flight is more than 20 years in the making.  State and local leaders are spending about $124,000 in public funds to fly from Denver to Japan.  The officials include Colorado's tourism director, Governor's aide Jamie Van Leeuvwen and Sandi Moilanen of the Colorado Office of Economic development and international trade.  The Denver Post reports the state government is spending about $55,000 to send representatives on the trip.

Lakewood police make a positive ID on the body of David Noren

Detectives say results from the autopsy allows them to pursue the case as a homicide.

Lakewood Police confirming the body of a man discovered in Clear Creek County was that of 49-year old David Noren who had been missing since May 20th.  Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for 34-year old Ryan Boyd Hicks who had been Noren's roomate at the time of the disappearance. Hicks is in Arizona.  It is not known when he will be returned to Colorado to make a first appearance and be advised of the potential charges he may face in Noren's death.  The warrant for Hicks includes charges of first degree murder, felony murder as well as robbery and criminal posession of a financial credit device.
